The Adventure Race was held at Oreti Beach and attended by 400 students from high schools across Southland.
On 28 November the Adventure Race was held at Links Road, Oreti Beach. Attended by 400 students from Southland Boys’ High School, Verdon College, James Hargest College, and Southland Girls’ High School, the Adventure Race has three events that teams must compete in and get markers for: biking, kayak and navigation.
Southland Boys’ High School entered 26 teams of four students each, all excited for the day ahead. The race is about working as a team, developing skills you didn’t know you possessed and most importantly, having FUN.
Results are yet to come, but last year our Olympian team won the Year 7/8 division, so we shall see if they held on to the trophy this year - and whether they won the Year 9/10 trophy.
The rain started at 11.30am and got heavier as the day went on, and then it turned cold. Like last year but without the hail! Soaked and cold, the teams dribbled back in from 12.30pm with the majority finishing the course by 2pm.
The gazebo broke under the conditions (again, like last year!) so Ms Mills covered all the bags with the gazebo cover to keep them dry – and she succeeded! The boys were delighted their clothes were still dry as they came to get changed at the end of the event.
A free sausage and bread and the boys were off home. No injuries, no missing children, and no teams wandering for hours lost. Ms Mills says she’ll take that as a win!
